Feast of St Fidelis

"Saint Fidelis of Sigmarigen and Saint Joseph of Leonessa" by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
“Saint Fidelis of Sigmarigen and Saint Joseph of Leonessa” by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Today is the optional feast of St Fidelis of Sigmaringen who was a Capucin friar who became a martyr. He was first a renowned lawyer who had the cause of the poor and the needy at heart. But he decided that his profession was endangering his salvation and joined the Capucins. He was appointed to lead the mission for the conversion of Grisons in Switzerland, to bring back the inhabitants of this canton from Protestantism to Catholicism. Heroically he suffered a martyr’s death.

Prayer

O God, who were pleased to award the palm of martyrdom to Saint Fidelis as, burning with love for you, he propagated the faith, grant, we pray, through his intercession, that, grounded in charity, we may merit to know with him the power of the Resurrection of Christ. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
